This book is odd because in where it shines the most, is also where it fails for me. The art in this is spectacular, hands down. I feel like there is no denying it. Seeing these pictures are beautiful and realistic and they fit in so well with the realistic type of story being told. The color in this helps with the painting like quality and adds a whole other level on godliness for the heroes wearing primary colors. The things done with light and how it is used to express the mysticism of the Spectre. All these things about the art is spectacular, and all these things hurt the book too. Action sequences honestly, just could not be understood. It took me a while to realize who was on who's side and who was fighting who and where and how. It was all just a mess; and in a book so reliant on you understanding how reckless these new heroes are, you can not actually ever see it because it is a jumbled mess. It does not help that the characters fighting are completely new, so even if you wanted to know who was fighting it wouldn't matter because you don't really know their names, or their abilities, or their back stories.
Now the concept for this book is very interesting. It is essentially posing the question of what if all these Silver and Golden Age superheroes disappeared, and it is honestly horrible. The new heroes have stopped trying to strive to be the heroes of their past and now aim to be stronger and in that way they just turn reckless. The story is a little reliant on you just going with the flow as they mention characters and you have no idea who they are but you just have to believe that they are a part of this lore of Kingdom Come.
I thought Spectre was very cool in this issue, serving as a spiritual guide and a plot device for the reader to get some context in the story. I like how it kind of feels like what Watchmen would have been if they would have made it in the DC Universe and had made it slightly less dark.
